Digital Tradesperson Eligibility Guidelines

There are three possible ways to take advantage of the digital construction learning material offered by Digital Tradesperson. Applicants should review the details of each program carefully before applying to the program.
There are no application/program fees for eligible applicants

Applications are to be submitted via online forms found at www.digitaltradesperson.com unless otherwise indicated. All applications are subject to review by a program administrator.

Participating Employers must:

  • Be a member of an Alberta Construction Association local affiliate.
  • Operate in Alberta.

1. Digital Transitions: Tradespeople Transitioning to VDC

This training stream will prepare tradespeople who have existing experience in the skilled trades for a transition to Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) roles.

Subsidies up to $15,000 per participant are available to reimburse employers for wages paid and VDC software licenses for a work experience placement after coursework is completed.

  • Applications are to be submitted by the employer.
  • Must complete a 4-day in-person training course (Edmonton and Calgary)
  • The participant must complete a paid work experience placement of at least 200 hours after completing the in-person coursework.
  • The work experience must be in a VDC focused role.
  • The Participant must have a current role, or recent background, in skilled trades.
  • The participant must be hired as an employee according to Alberta employment standards.
  • Location of work must be primarily in Alberta.
  • Employers cannot receive funding from other provincial granting programs for Digital Tradesperson work experience placements.

2. Upskilling: Exposing Trandespeople to BIM and VDC

This training stream is for trades professionals with construction experience interested in gaining Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) experience and will remain in an operations/site role.

  • Applications must be submitted by the employer.
  • Have a current role, or recent background, in the skilled trades.
  • Must complete a 2-day in-person training course (Edmonton and Calgary)
  • Have a current role, or recent background, in skilled trades.
  • Location of work must be primarily in Alberta.

3. For Apprentices: Exposing Apprentices to BIM and VDC

This online course is for apprentices who wish to learn more about Virtual Design and Construction and its use on the job site. Coursework will be provided as self-paced eLearning modules, available online.

Coursework consists of 4 online learning modules (approximately 1 hour each) with quiz assessments.

  • Applications are to be submitted by the participant.
  • Participants must complete a 4 module online training course (approximately 4 hours).
  • Be registered in an Alberta apprenticeship program.
  • Be an Alberta resident.
